Signs that warrant an evaluation:
Bleeding or swelling in the joints
Bleeding inside the knees, ankles, or elbows (hemarthrosis) is one of the most characteristic signs of hemophilia, and without treatment it can damage the joint over time.
Large bruises with no injury to explain them
When they appear easily and are larger than expected, they can point to a clotting problem, not just sensitive skin.
Prolonged bleeding after surgery or a dental extraction
Bleeding that takes much longer than normal to stop deserves evaluation, especially if it's happened before.
Frequent gum or nose bleeding with no apparent cause
On its own it can have many explanations, but combined with a family history, it warrants a coagulation workup.

Types of hemophilia I've treated
Hemophilia varies based on the affected clotting factor and its origin — hereditary, or less commonly, acquired in adulthood.
Hemophilia A
The most common form, caused by a deficiency of clotting factor VIII. Its severity — mild, moderate, or severe — depends on the factor level present, and this determines both how often bleeds occur and the treatment needed.
Hemophilia B
Less common than hemophilia A, caused by a deficiency of factor IX. It behaves clinically in a similar way, though replacement treatment uses a different factor.
Acquired Hemophilia
An uncommon form that can appear in adulthood with no family history, caused by an autoimmune mechanism that attacks the clotting factor. Unlike the hereditary forms, it tends to appear suddenly and requires a different diagnostic approach.
Hemophilia Carriers
Women who carry the gene don't just pass the condition on to their children — many have lower-than-normal factor levels and can have bleeding symptoms of their own, such as heavy periods or prolonged bleeding after a procedure, that often go undiagnosed.
