Types of leukemia I've treated

Leukemia isn't a single disease — it includes several distinct types, based on origin, rate of progression, and treatment. Knowing which one you have is the first step to understanding what to expect.

01

Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML)

Progresses quickly because immature myeloid cells multiply uncontrollably in the bone marrow. It's more common in adults and usually requires starting intensive chemotherapy without delay.

02

Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL)

Originates in immature lymphocytes and is the most common type of leukemia in childhood, though it also occurs in adults. Because it progresses quickly, it requires immediate treatment after diagnosis.

03

Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML)

Develops slowly and, in most cases, is linked to a specific genetic alteration (the Philadelphia chromosome). Many patients maintain a good quality of life with targeted oral therapy and periodic follow-up.

04

Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL)

It's the most common type of leukemia in older adults. In many cases it progresses so slowly that the first step is careful observation rather than immediate treatment.
