When iron doesn't correct anemia as expected, it's worth investigating whether the cause isn't a deficiency at all, but a problem with hemoglobin production.

Types of thalassemia I've treated
Thalassemia varies widely in severity depending on how many genes are affected — from mild forms that go unnoticed to forms that require regular transfusions.
Thalassemia Minor (Thalassemia Trait)
The mildest form, which often causes no significant symptoms but can be mistaken for iron-deficiency anemia on lab tests.
Thalassemia Intermedia
A moderate-severity form, which may require occasional transfusions depending on life stage or higher-demand situations, such as pregnancy.
Thalassemia Major
The most severe form, which generally requires regular transfusions starting in childhood and careful management of iron buildup from those transfusions.
Thalassemia Trait and Family Planning
When both partners carry the trait, there's a risk of having a child with thalassemia major — a common reason to request this evaluation before pregnancy.
