Signs that warrant an evaluation:
Sudden pain or swelling in one leg
This can be a sign of deep vein thrombosis — a clot in a deep vein that requires evaluation without delay.
Sudden difficulty breathing or chest pain
This can indicate a clot has reached the lungs (pulmonary embolism), a real medical emergency.
Recurrent pregnancy loss
In some cases, repeated pregnancy loss stems from a coagulation disorder that a thrombophilia workup can identify.

Types of thrombophilia I've treated
Thrombophilia can be hereditary, present from birth, or acquired over the course of life. Identifying which one applies determines the treatment and its duration.
Factor V Leiden
The most common hereditary cause of thrombophilia, which increases clotting risk by altering how the body regulates coagulation.
Protein C or S Deficiency
Less common hereditary disorders that reduce the body's natural ability to prevent excessive clotting.
Antithrombin III Deficiency
An uncommon hereditary cause, but one associated with a particularly high risk of thrombosis.
Antiphospholipid Syndrome
An acquired, autoimmune cause of thrombophilia. It's one of the causes investigated when there's a history of recurrent pregnancy loss.
